The Most Disappointing Games of This Year, Per Metacritic

At every turn, enthusiasts are quick to share their lists of the best titles of 2025. Yet, where are the disasters, the failures? It's time to take a momentary detour to recognize the lowest-rated games of the year, based on the aggregate scores from Metacritic. Is every one of these games truly as terrible as the ratings suggest? We shall see.

10. Welcome Tour for Switch 2

Aggregate Score: 54/100, Audience Score: 3.4/10

Initial reactions to this tech demo were shaped by its $9.99 price tag, with many voicing frustration it wasn't a free pack-in like some other console launches. Professional assessment was quite mixed, from "crushing disappointment" to somewhat forgiving takes that praised the polished software underneath the controversy. Regardless of the controversy, the title proved to be a strong digital seller during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 3.2/10

Marketed as "beyond a racing game," this simulation from studios in Germany and Poland received largely negative reviews. Critics noted that the game fell short in key areas, especially in a year packed with stellar racing games. For many, this underwhelming entry was better off left in the garage.

8. Bubsy's Purrfect Collection

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 8.6/10

First things first: the confusing punctuation is a minor annoyance. This collection of retro mascot platformers revives a rude feline known for non-stop hacky one-liners. Reviewers noted that these games were not good to begin with and haven't gotten better with age. The surprisingly strong user score remains a curious oddity to the professional reviews.

7. Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact

Aggregate Score: 53, User Score: 3.5

This anime-inspired fighting game was met with significant backlash from both reviewers and the dedicated community. Complaints centered on a limited character selection and a severe lack of features. Fan reaction was especially negative, with some expressing a desire that the title's poor performance would serve as a lesson for the developers.

6. Riders Vs Dogoos

Aggregate Score: 51, Audience Score: 5.3

Hailing from the anime-style Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this motorcycle action game tasks players with collecting slime-like creatures. The assessment was that its attempt to channel a unique gameplay loop ultimately fell flat, coming across as more of a cash grab than a substantial series entry. Its 3-hour duration combined with a $40 price tag seemed like a bold choice.

5. Captain Blood

Metascore: 50, User Score: 5.3

This title is a resurrected relic from the past, seeing the light of day after years and years in production delays. The publishers consciously chose to release the game as an original experience of its time, accepting that modern gamers might not appreciate its dated design. As such, many reviews noted that the interesting history of its resurrection was more compelling than the end product.

4. Scar-Lead Salvation

Metascore: 44, User Score: 2.4

This anime-art action game drawing from games like *Returnal* fell flat with critics. The main issues were repetitive adversaries, repetitive levels, and a forgettable story. A particular feature involving the character's attire was widely panned and took away from the game's enjoyment.

3. Paramedic Simulator

Aggregate Score: 44, User Score: 4.9

Think of the engaging medical sims of the past, then take out the memorable characters. That, according to reviews, is roughly *Ambulance Life*. Reviewers found the emergency response sections to be tedious and repetitive, and the narrative's handling of mental health topics was criticized as being tone-deaf. The overall experience was deemed a missed opportunity.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Aggregate Score: 43, User Score: 5.8

This new direction for the classic virtual pet formula turns the franchise into a town-management title. The result, based on critics, was a unsatisfying assortment of repetitive tasks that rapidly overstayed its welcome. Some reviews went so far as to label it one of the lowest-quality titles available on its platform, noting a complete absence of depth.

1. MindsEye

Aggregate Score: 37, User Score: 2.5

Arriving as a blockbuster open-world action game from a ex-Rockstar veteran's experienced developers, *MindsEye* was a notable critical flop. Reviews heavily criticized its lousy combat, boring plot, and a multitude of game-breaking glitches. Many found it to be a regression compared to much older games in the action genre. Amidst the sea of negativity, a small handful of positive user reviews found something to enjoy in the experience, serving as a rare counterpoint.
